The Fifth Season
by N.K. Jemisin
This is my second read, but the first time I experience this work in the original language.
In 2021 I was new to SF-Fantasy and read "The Broken Earth" translated to my first language.
My mind is blown again by how astonishing this first volume is. The level of craftmanship poured in one of the most unique magic systems I ever seen, with a worldbuilding where cataclysms are considered a fifth season, characters that are deeply relatable, an unforgetable emotional impact, a powerful authorial voice and most important the people. These are more than characters, their experiences and ther fight for survival and freedom make them so relatable and so real.
I need to be honest here, in all my years of reading I have not encountered a more refined first novel in a trilogy.
For me, the use of the second person narrative felt so purposeful even on the first read. With the foresight of the ending of the trilogy, I want to ask the readers who are hesitant due to the second person narative to trust the proces. It is so relevant and has such a emotional pay off in the end.
I read a Romanian translation by Laura Ciobanu of this brilliant work and I am in awe.
The biggest challenge of the book was the Prologue , which felt vague, but it was full of hints and information that were necessary for solving the mysteries of the story.
The author has done an amazing job with the worldbuilding, the morally grey characters and the magic system.
"For all those that have to fight for the respect that everyone is given without question".
Thank you N. K. Jemisin!
