When Kingdoms Fall is an alluring dark fantasyโ a ride full of the most unexpected twists and turns, the book is both light to read and simultaneously packed with a ton of details.
Personally the concept of the book was what impressed me the most, it is what held my attention more than anything else be it our angry biting characters or the well crafted plot line. This was probably the first time I got to see faeries and elves in the same book, not to mention I was heavily intrigued by the whole hidden kingdom aspect. Topping it off with an unbalanced realm abandoned by the Gods and a cursed forest, the book creates a perfect amount of curiosity to toy with the reader's mind long after you're finished reading.
Now speaking for what did not work for me, I felt that the magic system was not clarified very thoroughly which left me confused at some parts. The time of the events taking place too was a little hard to keep track of (but it did get better towards the end).
Moreover, being someone who's reading experience tends to be heavily influenced by the characters of the book, I really do wish that those other than Willa had been fleshed out a bit more too. I felt like though there were so many characters for me to be interested in, Willa's background was very heavily more prioritised than any other's and I didn't really get to know most of them deeply enough to form an emotional connection.
Nonetheless, the ending has left me with a feeling that this book was naught but a teasing prologue for what's to come next, I can't believe it ended on such a heated note! Suffice to say I found myself frozen into my place for the next couple minutes trying to process what had happened.
Overall, reading When Kingdoms Fall was quite an enjoyable experience. It's perfect for anyone looking to dive in a story so suspenseful that it'll have you hanging by the edge of your seat! I'll most definitely be looking forward to the sequel โก
