I want to preface this by saying there are some trigger warnings, specifically abuse of consent and negative LGBTQIA+ representation.
I appreciated the strength of Mary's character and her determination to fight for a better life. As for Toby, I did not like his character as he was very one-track-minded, and his choices were abusive or disrespectful to women.
The magic system seems a little sexualised, as were most of the themes of the storyline. I also did not appreciate that the only queer character was the antagonist.
Overall, it was a good book, just not the book for me.
