Gingerbread Girl
by Colleen Coover, Paul Tobin
What do you really know about a person? Gingerbread Girl (to be published in July, but all available to read online here) explores this question from all possible angles, as a multitude of people try to get a handle on the truth behind Annah Billips, a flirty, fun, yet infuriatingly capricious and quirky 27-year old girl.
Through the course of the evening, the story passes through the hands of a variety of narrators (from Annah's date for the evening to a pigeon they pass along the way), but it never loses its focus. Writer Paul Tobin's grip on the story is secure, confident in its ability to pull off such a stunt. Greatly aiding this endeavor is Colleen Coover's simple yet gorgeous artwork. Annah should be infuritating, but with the mischievous grin that Coover gives her, you see why everyone seems to fall for her in spite of her serious flaws. Who is Annah Billips? Even when we're done, we know all about her, yet we don't really know her at all--just like a real person.
