I’ve seen endless praise about this book online, and I had high expectations, but I was a bit disapppointed…
First of all I found Patroclus to be a boring MC, he’s so… passive? Like, he doesn’t do much (up until right before he dies lol), he just observes, his only personality trait seems to be being obsessed with Achilles. I just don’t get what Achilles sees in him, and Achilles was really sweet for most of the book, then the war finally started and he became an asshole. The two main characters are too underdeveloped for how much time we have to spend with them.
The pacing felt a little off too, not much seemed to actually happen, despite the story spanning so many years, it’s like I was just reading a series of diary entries (”we did this, then that” “we spent weeks/months/years doing this”).
I did find the prose to be beautiful though, a beautifully sad story.
