House of Chains by Steven Erikson
2.0

The beginning and end of this book brings this down to a 2 star for me. I hated Karsa's POV in part one of the book, as all he did was kill and rape people for no other reason than glory. The entire time I was just hoping he would die, and it made part 1 so miserable that I had to put the book down for months after finishing it.

The rest of the book is alright except for the very end, specifically the conflict between Felisin and Tavore. It was the thing I was looking forward to the most at the end of the book, and I felt cheated as Tavore doesn't even get to see that Sha'ik is her sister. This may come in later books, but for now it has really soured my opinion on House of Chains. The ending with the ghost army also felt like a big Deus Ex Machina for me.

Aside from the negatives, I love most of the parts involving Fiddler and other Malazan Marines. They're where I think this series really shines for me.
