I can't believe the discrepancy between the first book and this one. This one took all the bad parts of the first one, and got rid of all the good parts. It also sort of turned into something else entirely. Instead of a romantasy about magical trials and falling for the dark king, it was an all over the place romp around the land with found family aspects. Though I liked the characters, the found family stuff just wasn't believable. There's no way they would have such close bonds after knowing each other for a week. And trying to find the grimoires and stop Andorra was just an exercise in misery because it kept jumping around too quickly and introduced way too many places and names. Also the entire plot with Eden and Andorra, Raven and Bastien's mother, and the grimoires just got too convoluted and I stopped trying to follow it, so the stakes didn't feel real. Plus I like Kirsi as a character, but having half the book in her POV was a real detriment, I didn't enjoy her POVs at all. Overall a great shame considering the potential set up in the first one.
