I didn’t really enjoy Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The story felt episodic and didn’t have a real plot, which made it hard to stay interested. A lot of the characters were just archetypes with no nuance, though some were actually pretty memorable and creative, like the Queen of Hearts. Carroll’s writing is easy to read, which is why I kept going even though I found it tedious. I can see how little kids might tolerate the simple, exaggerated characters, and how the story might appeal to children who feel confused by the often nonsensical ways adults make “rulings” or statements. I stuck with it because I wanted to understand more about the history of children’s fiction.
