This was a really depressing book.

I like the premise of it a lot, but found Olga’s way of processing emotions too disturbing and troubling, especially with her being responsible for three vulnerable living beings who suffered a lot because of her.

I’m obviously extremely sympathetic towards her and don’t blame her, I just found some scenes really disturbing, and the perspectives of the children and animals were especially sad to consider too.

The low rating is a reflection of elements of the plot which I think while so accurate to the human mind, were distractingly repetitive and disturbing. However, I really loved ucancallmev ‘s reflection of how “Ferrante displayed how abandonment is almost always contagious. To be abandoned by another almost always means to abandon yourself, those dependent on you, those you love.” which shows the importance of including those moments that I found disturbing.
