Kiss Her Once for Me by Alison Cochrun
3.0

2023 is my year of gay romcoms, and I think I'd hyped this book up so much in my head that it let me down. If I'd gone into it with less expectation, I might have enjoyed it more. All in all, an ok Easter read, but very much on the tell not show end of writing.

Pros:
taylor swift references, smart explorations of identity and queerness and vulnerability, SO MANY FUN TROPES, kissing in the snow is a dream I have had since lunchtime now etcera, Xmas tunes for the win, I do absolutely love a book that reads like its from AO3 while creating new characters who I really rooted for and became attached to. WHAT A MEET CUTE. fun!! gays deserve more books like this, just done better.

Cons:
way too much foot content (pls it is NOT sexy). I was confused about how this avoids the pandemic entirely while also being deeply rooted in tiktok and tiktok speak and directly set in 2021 - 2022. I do love escapism but this jarringly stuck out to me while reading. Would you let all these people into your home and your bakery over winter without making them take RATs -- you're telling me nobody got covid and ruined xmas?? The hyper labelling and using those labels to explain entire character arcs wasn't done right imo and sometimes at a detriment to actual representation and Jack gave me the ick by the end which was disappointing bc I really had been rooting for the love!!
