Heartstopper Volume 5 by Alice Oseman
5.0

Nick and Charlie have been through a lot together and have finally uttered those three special words out loud “I love you,” and the two boys are seemingly ready to take their relationship to the next level.

However, with Nick’s last year of school on the horizon, he and Charlie must also think about their own individual futures, what they want in life after they graduate and what it will mean for their relationship together.

As usual, Alice Oseman once again pulls out another beautiful queer love story that I would have killed for as a young gay teenager. I loved the development of Charlie in this volume too, he’s still healing from his past but he is also setting healthy boundaries and doesn’t want everyone seeing him as fragile or walking on eggshells with him just because of his mental health issues. I also ADORNED seeing our little Charlie Spring really get a confidence boost on himself and realize his own power on his own. I also loved how Nick addressed his insecurities of not knowing who he is when he’s away from Charlie and slowly opening up to his other friends and figuring out what he wants when it comes to his future.

The romance was as sweet as can be and I really enjoyed that it portrayed young queer love in a respectful manner (as sometimes the LGBTQ content is often very overly sexualized, I liked how this explored more in tune feelings of wanting to be with your partner on an intimate level while showing the very real shyness and nervousness that it brings when you first explore that territory with each other).

As always, I loved the communication Charlie and Nick have on their relationship that makes them such a healthy representation, they talk to each other about their worries and while they both dread being long distance, Charlie doesn’t want Nick to miss out on his first university pick just because it’s farther away and they both understand that while they can love each other, it is also important to be able to spend time apart and realize the other will be okay on their own too.

I’ll be sad to see this wonderful series end but my queer heart will be so happy to see how Alice sends off our dear characters on the final volume! ❤️
