This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger

5.0

My favorite book of 2020. I almost don’t want to start another so this one closes the year. I definitely will need a few days because these characters are still in my heart.

This story of four orphans who escape an Indian boarding school in 1932 is a Huck Finn style epic journey with many twists. They are all searching - for home, for family, for themselves, for God. They find parts of all of these in different ways and places along their trip from western Minnesota to St Louis.

The characters (big and small), the landscape and the feeling of the time are portrayed vividly and empathetically. I felt like I could walk into the pages and join the story.

I hope we get another standalone novel from Krueger, because the first two are outstanding.
