American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis

5.0

I think this is the only book I’ve rated 5 stars that I actually feel a bit guilty about. This book is truly sick. The torture and murder scenes go on for pages and pages in excruciating detail that I have yet to read anywhere else, and so do the sex scenes which can go for 5 pages of equally excruciating detail.

While I wouldn’t say I enjoyed reading these particular scenes, the ultimate enjoyment of this book (for me) comes from the rollercoaster-type of emotional waves I went through while reading. Cringing and having to take short breaks during the incredibly sadistic scenes, only to laugh and roll my eyes at how realistically shitty Patrick Bateman is. A detail I especially enjoyed was how different Bateman sees himself in his head (the smartest, richest, hottest, and most charismatic guy to ever step foot in the Big Apple) versus how he actually interacts with people (a big awkward, stumbles over his words, doesn’t know how to respond).

This novel is the ultimate emotional rollercoaster I’m happy I went on, that I’m also happy to never go on again.
