Did not finish book.

I LOVED [b:These Broken Stars|13138635|These Broken Stars (Starbound, #1)|Amie Kaufman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1383578978l/13138635._SY75_.jpg|18315607] so thought I'd give this a try. I'm not a huge steampunk fan, but I've liked some. I was at around 50% and this just wasn't grabbing me though - so it's going to be a DNF, or at least a NRN (not right now). My library didn't have the sequels in digital anyway, so I wasn't likely to finish the series, so I figured I'd stop here.

This just dropped the reader right into a completely different world with no build-up or explanation. You can get a little by reading the blurb, but shouldn't you also be able to read the story without that? It's a world within a wall, run by machines and magic. Children are picked to be "harvested" for the "resource" and "adjustments" were given to those who didn't cooperate (and an adjustment was being forced to walk through the magic wall?) When "pixies" appeared, I thought this was magic like fae, but these pixies are machines, run on the magic/resource. Lark apparently is a "renewable" ... she can be harvested more than once. She escapes to the world outside the wall ... and that's about where I called it.

There was a small bit about a paper bird ... reminded me a bit of [b:The Paper Magician|20727654|The Paper Magician|Charlie N. Holmberg|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1405618531l/20727654._SY75_.jpg|40051132] and [b:The Bird and the Sword|29008738|The Bird and the Sword (The Bird and the Sword Chronicles, #1)|Amy Harmon|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1462457112l/29008738._SY75_.jpg|49250534].

e-book borrow from the library.
