You by Caroline Kepnes

4.0

"You" is the kind of book you don't read around your friends because you don't want to have to explain what it's about; at the same time, you're dying to tell everybody. It's a fast-paced, engrossing journey through the self-focused mind of a very unreliable narrator. As twisted as it is romantic. 10/10 would recommend to avid fiction readers who enjoy authors such as Stephen King, Nick Cutter or Chuck Palahniuk.

What I enjoyed most, strangely enough, was how imperfect Beck was. She's not a manic pixie dream girl, despite what you would expect. She's selfish, inconsistent, and at times so unpredictable that you almost find yourself becoming just as frustrated as Joe is. Multiple times during reading I had to remind myself that I was NOT supposed to be sympathizing with - or worse, rooting for - this narrator.

The ending's a real gut-punch, but predictable. The ride to get there is what really makes this book worth it. There are moments that feel like you're reading a sweeping romance novel instead of the memoirs of a deranged lunatic. Kepnes creates a character so convinced of his own truths that he is capable of convincing the reader as well. This is the mark of a great writer of suspense. Can't wait to see what she does next.
