Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen

5.0

Autobiographies can be pretty hit or miss for me. Sometimes it just feels like the person is reciting events from their past with no insight or explanation, a boring timeline that doesn’t give the reader anything special. But Bruce really nailed this.

I’ve always enjoyed Bruce Springsteen’s music, but I’ve never known much about him or followed him closely. But working in a library you come across a lot of random books that you wouldn’t have otherwise picked up. I saw this cover and felt compelled to check it out. (I DO judge books by their covers, honestly).

I’m really glad I did pick it up though because it was so much more than I expected. Springsteen, obviously an amazing songwriter, translates his poetic skills so well on paper while also having a distinctly colloquial tone. This book is a beast but it was super easy to read and flowed well. I like how the chapters are split up almost like vignettes, weaving in and out through time, but still following a general timeline. I also really connected with Springsteen’s analysis on his own mental health and battling depression.

I’d highly recommend this book to anyone who loves (or even just likes) Bruce Springsteen. It’s a lovely book with a lot of heart.
