There are seven courts that form Aloria, each of them with their own Trial. It is a privilege to Trial for you court, to prove that you can beat it and make it out. The Trials give unique powers to those who survive and they always have something to do with the way you best it. But the people of The Court of Valor do not know this. Instead, they believe being trialed is something to fear since they are forced into it as a form of punishment because Lord Drytas is a greedy man who seeks power.
Survival is all Lysta knows, keep your head down, stay out of trouble. But when she sees a young girl in need, she cannot help but interfere. She is caught and forced to Trial which gives her power that Drytas feels is necessary for his protection. But when she finds out what happened to the Trial after she completed it and Drytas let's his plans slip, Lysta puts her faith into someone she is not sure she can trust to get her out of this mess.
Knowing how Lord Drytas plans to use the untrialed citizens of Valor to launch a surprise attack of the rest of the courts, she takes matters into her own hands. But even in the Capital, no one can be trusted. The Lords and Ladies of the other courts are entitled and cruel but realising she can't even trust the person she so desperately wants to, well, that makes things a little harder.
My thoughts:
Absolutely mindblowing! I don't think I realised how good this book would be until I picked it up! The cover is so stunning I knew I had to read it but... just WOW. I love how @tbrwarriors and I agree that this read had such a Fourth Wing Vibe - not in the same plot sense, but more of how it is written, how the story flows, the high stakes and all the feels it gives you while reading it. I thoroughly enjoyed every single page of this book. There was so much action, deception and mystery it kept me on the edge of my seat - and do I have THEORIES!! I absolutely love the MMC and I just cannot wait for book 2! For a debut, this was absolutely phenomenal ❤️
