Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
by Roald Dahl
87/100 (4)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is structured unlike a lot of stories. It doesn't really have a climax. There's some suspense in waiting to find out how each of the bad kids gets dealt with but not too much. And yet it's a very enjoyable read and re-read. How does Dahl pull it off?
Also, as an aside, each time I read this I'm more troubled by the slavery of the Oompa Loompas and that we aren't really bothered by the fact that they are happy slaves who like to sing songs while they work?
