Wonderland
by Zoje Stage
Wonderland is a very atmospheric book - creating a slow, creeping sense of dread for the protagonist and her family.
There's some incredibly unique writing here. Stage uses the weather, flora, fauna and the wider landscape to produce the book's horror, playing with some of the tropes of the haunted house in a less domestically focused way.
I enjoyed a lot of the descriptive writing and characterisations, and enjoyed the slower, family-driven, more contemplative attempt of a haunting narrative.
However, the book loses a lot in its explaination of the hauntings, with an ending that felt like something you might find within a younger audience fantasy book.
I also listened to the audiobook by Xe Sands, who is an incredible narrator and I would absolutely recommend her rendition of the book.
