A History of Wild Places
by Shea Ernshaw
The best part of finishing this book was just reading a review by a reader who is furious that she read this book. I giggled merrily through her listing of reasons she hated this book more than any other she’s read in five, nay, ten years! Huzzah! This may have been the highlight of my day. I’m serious.
Back to my own boring Goodreads existence. I did not hate this book with such delightful hatred that it could make my life worth living. A compelling hook, effective opening, and then…
Look, I love the movie The Village. It’s absurd but awesome, has beautiful Not Yet Batshit Crazy Joaquin Phoenix and some of the scariest moments ever in a movie. I figured out the twist early and I NEVER figure that shit out. Pastoral relied on plot devices that were all even more absurd. And also: a GUARD HOUSE? There’s a few layers of confusion there that I can’t even.
As the above-referenced reviewer described it— it’s a dumb commune in Northern California. Northern California is full of dumb communes. heehee. Though I see the author lives in “a mountain town” in Oregon so I must stalk her; maybe she’s a neighbor!
