The Shining by Stephen King
5.0
I have admittedly never read a King book and I started with IT, but while I was choking through that massive book, Spotify launched its audiobooks segment and I saw The Shining was on there. I loved the movie, one of my favorite, but I know that it wasn't King's favorite as it didn't portray things right. So, wanting to give King another chance and also curious by this (as well as curious about audiobooks as I've not tried those before either), I started to give it a listen.
I had fully intended on this to only be something I reach for after reaching my reading goals of the other books I was reading at the time. That, turned into me constantly reaching for this audiobook. One, audiobooks are convenient when you're busy doing other things. Two, this story absolutely sucked me in. Far better than IT has been (though I'm still slogging through that one). I started to understand why King didn't like the movie, there are nuances in his book that the movie didn't give. Details that aren't quite right or aren't really shown at all - as far as I remember, it's admittedly been awhile since I've seen the movie last. And a whole deeper meaning behind the slowly unwinding sanity that happens in this story.
If you're like me and have only watched the movie, I highly recommend you give the book a read. This has been my only King book I've read and completed, but it's now snugly in my favorites pile and I will be picking up a physical copy for my home library. I might even give it a reread down the line, that's how much I loved this book.
