Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett
5.0

Let me start this review by saying that I'm not one to constantly search for hidden meanings behind the author's words. I'm not the type to analyze why the curtains were a deeper shade of blue.

However, despite my lack of literary prowess, this book was a truly fascinating read. The bizarre yet functional socioeconomic setup propped up and overseen by the Patrician alone makes this book worth the price.

While many reviews have rightfully praised Captain Vimes' character arc and the well-written City Watch, Ankh-Morpork, the city itself, is often overlooked as one of the best characters in the story.

The escalating events in this book kept me hooked with their weird, wonderful, and unexpected yet logical progression. Reading about how the citizens of Ankh-Morpork react and adapt to each development was something I could not get enough of.

In short, this book is absolutely delightful, with depth. It's easily one of the better Discworld novels, and that's saying something considering the high quality of the series as a whole.
