The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan
4.5

I have finally started the Wheel of Time, and now that I'm 1/15 of the way done I can say that I'm having a pretty good time.

I think expectations really helped me enjoy this book. I knew going in that it was going to start off *a lot* like Lord of the Rings, and so when that happened I could focus on the differences instead of the similarities. And there are a lot of differences! I think this is the only (?) story I've come across where the wise older wizard mentor character is a woman, which I enjoyed a lot, even if I think the cover did her kinda dirty. I also really liked the idea of any of the three boys being the Chosen One, and even though we sorta know who its gonna be the whole time, I really liked all the time we spent with Perrin; he's definitely one of my favorites. I also hope Mat gets more to do as time goes on, since this book it felt like he was mostly there to be foolish and make mistakes and get people into situations that could advance the plot.

Overall I'm already sold on the world Robert Jordan made here, and Rosamund Pike's narration for the audiobook only added to the strength of the story.

It's hard for me to believe there are another 13 mainline entries after this one. There's a lot of world to open up, but my god is that a lot of story. Also, I know everyone says Eragon ripped off Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, but I'll be damned if it didn't feel like it really did take so much from the start of this book.
