Diary of a Void by Emi Yagi

4.0

a great commentary on the role of a woman within the all-around filled with men workplace in this hilarious and charming novel, diary of a void.

i mainly picked this up because i’ve been seeing my fellow bookstagram friends reading and updating their reading journey with it on bookstagram. i was attracted by the concept of the book that i decided to just give it a go and it is indeed an interesting one. shibata pretends to be pregnant to ease off her workload—more so the menial ones—and it worked! everybody believes her!

it was funny to read how she went on with it and surprisingly enough, she managed to pull it off so well that everybody around her was genuinely convinced she was pregnant! even i do at one point. she took impostor syndrome into a whole ’nother level.

emi yagi’s writing was so straightforward and yet also so brilliantly done that it smoothly blurs the line between reality and fantasy and i was absolutely charmed by the hilarious characters in the book, especially our main character shibata. it’s such an insightful look into how being a certain way—pregnant in this case—changes the way you were initially treated by the people around you. in a way, people don’t care about you until something big happens and this shows it.

highly recommending this one to all!
