The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett

4.0

Vanishing half is a story of identical twin sisters and their daughters. Stella and Desiree run away from home together only to end up going their separate ways soon after. The twins though identical in their appearance are stark opposite in every other way especially in the choices they make and the lives they end up living. While one sister returns home, the other puts as many miles as she can from it and pretends to be white. While one never stops searching for her sister, the other wants nothing to do with her past. The story then progresses to their daughters - Jude and Kennedy. Their paths intersect and so the story unfurls...

The narrative is very intricate and quite beautifully written. It skips between two generations, the spotlight focusing on one character and then the next, often moving back and forth with ease. For me the most memorable characters were Jude and her boyfriend Reese.
