No Longer Human by Junji Ito
5.0

Wow. This book is incredible. I loved the way the character deconstructs what it means to be human and what a human being actually is, bringing up so many valid points that made me as a reader question humanity. This novel really showcases the dark side of humanity and society, which in the eyes of the narrator is an individual that makes “then-and-there” decisions that are beneficial only to them.

His fight against society and human beings around him is a sad one. Really, he fights HIMSELF so that he may conform to everyone else whilst simultaneously questioning the nature of humans in order to fit in: it’s a never ending cycle. From an early age he learns to put on a facade in order to fit in with others and disguise his real feelings: that he’s not human. From here, he develops into an impulsive person living a very VERY sad existence. He continues to question the world, “figuring” out things along the way but even then, he always doubts himself and continues to question even more minuscule concepts that others (other human beings) don’t even think about.

His sole focus on conforming and BEING human played a HUGE role in his sad life. He has no purpose because of this, drifting through life, living day-to-day.

The character is unlikeable, and others may have not liked this book because of that, but I think it’s a key factor in the book that ties into the plot.

⚠️Spoilers⚠️
The ending (epilogue) really solidified that the mc was able to deceive everyone around him. They remembered him as being a nice, good boy who was tainted by his father, when in reality he was incredibly complex and the opposite of this.

Although the writing was simple, I think that the contents of it made it a very good read. I felt a lot: sadness, pity, hate etc.
