Space Team by Barry J. Hutchison

4.0

This is probably one of the funniest and most enjoyable sci-fi stories I've read in a long time. I laughed out loud at several parts and think, in general, this was cleverly written and engaging. I will definitely be checking out subsequent books in the series. The only downside of the book was that I found the protagonist (Cal) particularly grating in the middle of the book when he seemed solely concerned with trolling his fellow crew members by doing things that annoyed them. A few of his jokes (putting "space" in front of everything, for example, or not taking things seriously to the point where he seems genuinely stupid for not comprehending the gravity of what's happening) are funny at first but just get absolutely run into the ground. His character arc is satisfying by the time things wrap up, but there's definitely a point in the middle where his antics are a real detriment to the rest of the book. That said, though, I really did enjoy this and will undoubtedly read the next installment.
