The Witch Hunter
by Virginia Boecker
This book got a lot of buzz, so I was excited to read it. I have to say, though, it reads to me much more like a middle grades book than YA (except for, y'know, the sex references). The world building is thin (the set-up felt rushed and confusing) and the characters are less complicated and more cliche than what I'd expect in YA vs. MG. There is a lot of spelling things out for readers where leaving it as subtext might have been a nice touch, and a few confusing plot holes. I tried to stick it out but with just 60 pages to go I had to admit to myself that I just did not care enough about the story or characters to hang in there.
