Starship Repo is the kind of absurdly funny caper full of colorful characters you can tell the author had a blast writing, and his glee is infectious.

It was the "one human among an alien crew" setup a la' Farscape and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy that really drew me in. Here it's a teenaged Earthling scam artist surviving by her wits dubbed "Firstname Lastname" by a computer error (I know, I know, but I promise even on audiobook this was less distracting than one might anticipate since she's swiftly nicknamed "First") who's making her own way until a starship repossessing crew makes her an offer she can't refuse.

Tomlinson delivers on his fun fish-out-of-water premise with many highly original and quirky aliens whose interactions are comically timed to perfection with plucky "First" just trying to roll with it all. Including a memorable occasion where she's assumed to be "cosplaying" an Earthling and she deadpans her human suit took "17 years" to make and "my parents helped."

The quips and hijinks keep coming, and the odds rise ever more steeply against the bold-as-brass crew, yet there's also some found family sweetness underneath the chaos---sometimes our renegades reveal a heart of gold that they didn't steal.

If you enjoy Futurama's referential humor and slick heist stories where misfit crews pull off audacious jobs with a plan 'so zany it just might work,' you should pick up Starship Repo at warp speed.

You don't have to read Gate Crashers set in the same universe to thoroughly enjoy this story, but you'll only be denying yourself more laughs if you don't.
