Roman and Jewel by Dana L. Davis

4.0

Bringing strong Romeo and Juliet vibes, this is a fresh take on the old story. Set on the stage of a new Broadway hip-hopera, it features heartthrob Zeppelin Reed as Roman and Jerzie Jhames as Jewel's understudy. The lead for Jewel is Cinny, a diva singer extraordinaire, and the combination of the 3 of them sets of the drama of the story.

And there is drama to go around! Love triangles, backstage manipulation, the intricacies of putting on a Broadway production, teen love, and parallels between the original play. Having read and taught R&J recently, it was fun to read this story for its similarities.

If you like Broadway musicals, modern updates to classic stories, and plots full of drama, you won't be disappointed with this one!
