Doctor Heartless by J. Saman
5.0
If you loved the first book, you’re going to love the second. Doctor Heartless was sensational from start to finish
Thank you to Grey’s Promotions for sending me an ebook Advanced Readers Copy for me to read and review. This is my spoiler-free & honest review.

I first came across J.Saman thanks to Grey’s Promotions last year via the second book in this series, Doctor Mistake. What drew me into that read was the accidental pregnancy trope—a controversial trope among many—, and although Doctor Heartless didn’t carry on that trope as a main theme or sub-theme, I wanted to follow the series on and see where this grumpy/sunshine, enemies-to-lovers, full of steam romance would take me.
The reader is in!
Before the plot/storyline had a chance to develop, the opening was off to a start with quite literally, a bang! Pun intended. Landon, aka ‘Doctor Heartless’, is quite the character! Pun, again, intended. Who we get to see in the opening to this novel is the polar opposite of the grumpy character we will see later on, but was as charming as he was at knocking my socks off! Cheeks we’re aflame and blushing wish vigour. Woah! J.Saman has written one hell of a beast in bed and I’m all here for it!
‘He pretended to be someone else, and I didn’t ask a lot of questions’.
This angle of secrecy is always something I love when it comes up in books. When one character knows something the other doesn’t, and decides to keep it either intentionally or not so intentionally, just does it for me. I love the sneaky suspense and/or drama it creates when it all comes to an explosive head. J.Saman wove some creative comedy into moments throughout the book when this came up as a topic between characters, providing lighthearted relief and many a side-eye glare from Elle. The moments that made me laugh definitely balanced the tenseness felt from the page, for sure. J.Saman knows how to give both the good and the bad (not literally bad, but those moments that leave us screaming at the page/screen, having us reach for our bookish tissues etc..), and showcase how her superb writing and it’s styles can create a truly unforgettable story.
Speaking of storyline, let’s talk about it here in Doctor Heartless (as much as one can without dropping a spoiler!).
There was so much packed into this novel and for a novel that was already 95K-word-strong read (which I love!), that is a true testament to the author. It doesn’t feel like you’re reading too much, or that there’s too much going on for you to process at all. Everything is just right and I was actually sad to swipe the last page closed. Landon, Elle and Landon’s daughter Stella were true joys to get to know and read about, I didn’t want the last page to come! I especially loved who J.Saman wrote Stella to be in terms of her sexuality. You’ll know when you read it for yourselves, but I’ve never read about a character at that age knowing herself to be who she feels she is, and the amount of respect and dignity given to the character and the topic was immensely commendable.
If you’re looking to start a brand new read and/or series, I would recommend Doctor Heartless. Go back and read the first two by all means, but this is my favourite of the series so far and I’m putting it on my Amazon paperback wishlist right now.
I’m thrilled that this is my first ever five star rating for J.Saman, and I hope that I can give many more well-deserved ones to her in the future!
