Heretics Anonymous
by Katie Henry
I can see why this book was included in last summer’s Sync Free Audiobooks for teens. Besides the high school setting, the subject of religion brings a nice framework for teens to explore and examine their own thoughts and feelings on the subject. I have gone back and forth on whether it would be useful to know the author’s religious leanings and I’ve concluded it’s better not to know.
As for the story: Henry gives a variety of religious leanings, from strict Catholic to a kind of paganism I’ve never heard of. I like that the main character grew so much; from his strict self-righteousness to his discovery that he’s not the smartest guy in the world and that people are more multi-dimensional than their stereotype.
Good enough story with the unique perspective of religion.
