Parallel Lives: Five Victorian Marriages by Phyllis Rose

3.0

Was initially really excited about this book. The first few chapters deserved that excitement they were interesting – full of “gossipy” detail balanced well by the calm/authoritative reason of the author. But really it was just too long, maybe 3 marriages would have been enough. Last couple of chapters were a real effort to read.

Shame, because there really isn’t anything else like this out there and it is a potentially really rich and interesting topic. Also the author clearly has the ability to write well, it just got a bit pulled out of shape somehow ….
