When I consider the 1969 is the year Maya Angelou published this memoir I think wow in 2025 “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” is still getting banned. Her memories are powerful and uncomfortable. I was on the bus when I read the violence she suffered and literally felt sick to my stomach. Her ability to reflect as an adult but still write the memories with a child’s perspective makes me consider the strength of youth? The vulnerability, innocence and loneliness of being raised by absent parents. As we experience our socialization physically, socially, culturally, racially these life defining moments are powerful and our hardiness as kids keeps us going. Obviously children should be protected from trauma but living in this “society” will still make its mark.
I didn’t know that Maya Angelou is a famous author from San Francisco and that’s why this was the City book club book in 2024. She is certainly a planner in her description of the Bay and working for public transit! Those little tidbits were enjoyable to me.
