Banquo's Son
by T.K. Roxborogh
I was excited to continue the story of Macbeth, as it is one of my favorite plays of Shakespeare. I was, however, a bit disappointed in the overall story arc. While the beginning of Fleance's story includes a love interest named Rosie, I found her character and story arc quite tedious by the middle of the book. Some might argue that she was a necessary device to provide Fleance the proper amount of "angst" in accepting the Scottish crown. Really, I think the plot would have been strong enough without adding what I consider a frivolous love interest. Contrary to Macbeth's single story plotline, Banquo's Son has layer upon layer of intrigue, which I think serves the story well. The rule of kings is complex and it's nice to see this story laden with turncoats, murder for hire, and general airs of mystery. I liked this book, but not enough to continue with the series.
