This was very difficult to read due to subject matter of the book. I almost DNF'd it. Abdul initially experiences abuse and trauma through no fault of his own, much like his mother Precious. However unlike his mother, he does almost nothing to better himself. He finds escape through dance but he still finds himself in some really messed up situations.

He's a rapist, pedophile, masochist, sadist. Indulges in self harm. </Spoiler>
