A Theory of Haunting by Sarah Monette

5.0

Scary, chilling, and inventive. Like all good haunted house stories there's a tangle of the house itself being malevolent and the ghosts being full of malice. Something is very wrong at Thirdhop Scarp indeed. Our protagonist is the sort of dusty archivist who barely knows how to talk to people but carries around whole libraries in their head. I found him extremely relatable. I too would much rather catalogue books the whole day long than carry on polite conversation with rich people. As always with Sarah Monette/Katherine Addison, I ate this book right up.
