ENNEAD九柱神 1 by Mojito

5.0

I love everything about Egypt's mythology, especially the Ennead.

Actually, I don't love it—I'm obsessed with it.

This first part of the comic tells the story of the fight between Seth and Horus over who gets to rule Egypt. Some parts stayed true to the original mythology, and others were different—but I didn’t mind that at all.

The first thing I want to note down is that, this writer somehow made me like Seth. Like, actually root for him, Which is wild, considering Seth literally killed Osiris and chopped him into seven pieces in the original mythology. I used to be an Osiris fan—and technically still am (outside this comic)—but every time Osiris showed up, I just wanted him to go back to Duat and leave Seth alone.

Also, whoever decided to give Seth red hair and eyes? Genius. He’s the god of the desert and war, and (as far as I know) he’s never described as beautiful. That just made me think of beauty privilege and how much it messes with our perceptions.

I have to mention that I liked Horus's personality in this story. He wasn’t interested in ruling or fighting—he was doing it for his mother. He was trying to win without hurting Seth, which is just adorable. Being the bigger man and acting like it (despite being a child compared to Seth)? I loved that.

There was one part I especially loved—when Seth refused to let Anubis touch a weapon because “he’s just a child,” while literally debating using weapons in a fight with Horus (the third match, I think). And Horus was like, “Um, I’m the youngest one here, UNCLE!”
That scene was everything. Super cute.

I loved this book with all my heart. Starting the next one now!

Lord have mercy on our hearts and souls...Seth! ... *-*
