Heartless by Marissa Meyer
4.0
"when pleased, i beat like a drum. when sad, i break like glass. once stolen, i can never be taken back. what am i?"
Leave it to Marissa Meyer to create a marvelous prequel to a classic story engraved in stone, and make it both original and familiar at the same time. She's truly a queen of retellings.
Heartless was so many things crafted into one beautiful and heartbreaking tale of an anti-heroine. There was so much magic, and intrigue in this story. It was enchanting as it was cruel. There was a ton of whimsicalness as there was a ton of madness. It was filled with idiosyncrasies as it was filled with horrors.
"but hoping," he said, "is how the impossible can be possible after all."
Prior to reading this story, I already knew this was going to end in a tragic way. This is the story of the Queen of Hearts, after all. So the whole time I was reading this book, I felt this sense of fear that something terrible was going to happen later on. The plot surprised me because there was so many mysterious events that built up the storyline. It wasn't just about Cath's dream, her family struggles, and her relationship with the court joker. The plot was, unexpectedly, so much more than meets the eye. And the romance, oh the romance, was so captivating. I absolutely love how it didn't escalate too quickly, and how it progressed in a slow burn. My only problem with this book is that the pacing was really slow and then all of a sudden it just picks up pace. The quick change of pace just threw me off quite a bit because it happened abruptly.
The writing was phenomenal. Marissa Meyer nailed it and gave Wonderland justice. I'm sure if Caroll read this today, he'd be happy and proud of Meyer for having written this book. The writing was very much like Caroll's but at the same time, we get to see aspects of Meyer's original styles and twists put into the story. The descriptions, in my opinion, were the best thing about the writing style. They were so vivid and poetic and very very peculiar. It can easily pull you into the world and you'll surely be mesmerized (and hungry, as well!). It was like clearly seeing Wonderland right through the pages.
"the easiest way to steal something, is for it to be given willingly."
The characters, their relationships, and their interactions with each other was fascinating. I love Cath's character so much. It actually makes me very sad that she ended up becoming the Queen of Hearts. She was just a sweet, innocent, young lady who only wanted to live her dreams. Jest was also fantastic. I was very in love with his character from the moment he made his grand entrance at the ball. He was a mysterious character, but he was also very witty. He was also genuine, caring, and understanding. There's just a lot of things that I love about his character.
Even though I had an idea where this story was going to go, this still broke my heart into pieces. There was so much pain and emotion, you can really feel what the characters were feeling.
In all honesty, I wish this book wasn't a stand-alone. Not because there was no conclusion to the story or that the end was not enough, but there's just so much to this world that it makes me want to open more doors and discover what else I can discover.
Heartless is a great book, the kind of book that will leave a reader wanting more.
"sometimes your heart is the only thing worth listening to."
