Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer
2.0

Chris, or "Alex", is not an easy person to empathize with. He has too many glaring faults. He throws away relationships, is very single-minded on what is the 'right' way to live life, is overly-romantic, and reckless. Without Krakauer's words of defense I don't know that many people would be able to stomach Chris's misadventures. Krakauer's defenses stem from the kinship he feels towards Chris, which is very obvious throughout the book.

There were lots of parts in the story that felt like filler; most of them trying to draw parallels between Chris and either Krakauer himself or other wanderers. Honestly much of it felt like Krakauer was trying his hardest to hit a certain page count. I would have preferred a more straightforward, factual book, but then it would have been much shorter, wouldn't it?

This book would appeal most to those with wanderlust or itchy feet that tingle for adventure. As for myself, I am too much of a homebody to feel any sort of kinship with Chris or Jon Krakauer. Living life in a bare, survivalist way simply doesn't appeal. Give me an air-conditioned home with a hot shower and all the comforts of modern life, and I'll be content.
