i loved so much about this book and it reminded me of a more grown up version of high school favorite “the madman’s daughter” by megan shepherd. when science has a more central theme to romantic stories, i sometimes find myself skimming because it’s not always digestible (read: boring lol) but i was actually so riveted by this book’s delivery and enjoyed seeing how the fmc’s mind worked in regard to learning about poisons.

there were some issues with pacing in the second half not so much towards plot movement but mainly in the frequent location changes lacking maybe more description? some scenes may have suffered from white room syndrome but the rest of it was so gorgeously atmospheric!

my eensie ick with this book was a scene that made me feel like a character i had grown to like was woefully sabotaged and idk if there is way to redeem it in the next book. there are some darker, heavier themes towards the end this book that are mainly performed by the main antagonist but the mmc kinda ends up joining in and i felt really conflicted (and truthfully confused) with the purpose of this direction.

i’ll absolutely be reading the next book though! respectfully, i am SAT 🙂
