Sundered Moon by Zammar Ahmer, Zammar Ahmer
5.0
4.5 stars!
What a sequel, what a finale! Sundered Moon is a dark & thrilling conclusion to The Book of Astea duology.
Book 2 picks up immediately where Riven Earth left off and throws you right back into the story. The characters grapple with the decisions and the events that brought them to this point and are constantly challenged anew. The world feels darker & bleaker, the characters are being pushed to their limits, yet glimmers of hope keep shining through, as the history starts coming together and connections become clearer.
After book 1, I was fairly certain to have a grasp on the intentions & motivations of everybody, to know who I liked and disliked, so what I did not see coming was how my opinion of certain characters would change and even keep changing. I don't think I've ever experienced a back and forth like this. But the plot kept taking surprising turns, confronting the characters with difficult situations, resulting in some unexpected outcomes.
While I liked the addition of the new POV, I think I would've preferred to have less and instead stay longer with the other perspectives. That would've allowed for an even deeper immersion (for me). Nevertheless, the characters & story were engaging throughout and it was exciting to follow along and experience their ups and downs.
It's hard to believe that this is a debut story. Ahmer has created here something very unique and highly original with his sprawling imagination and bold storytelling. I wouldn't mind reading more from this world, but am looking forward to whatever comes next, regardless. I will certainly keep an eye out for any future releases from this author!
