Okey dokey, let’s get into it! So before I read this book, I didn’t really know what it was about and I thought that Adam’s grandfather quite literally left him his heart, so I was a little confused (in my defence, I’d forgotten the synopsis by the time I opened the book 😂). The story itself was supposed to be very heart-warming, but some of the things didn’t sit well and kind of ruined it for me. I did like the little facts and quotes about hearts every chapter though! I thought those were very interesting.

I found the storyline quite odd, there didn’t seem to be a proper plot so I didn’t really know what to expect. The pace and flow of the story was quite odd too, sometimes everything would be slow, then it’d suddenly move super fast and suddenly there’s a new family member?? I don’t understand either. Some of the character actions or choices were quite questionable too, like how quickly William was inducted into the family, it felt like it was like 4 days, buuuuuut *Kermit sipping on tea*

The story is set in a diverse community of people, and the story touches on topics such as domestic violence and one of the characters use sign language to communicate, which I thought was interesting. Buuuut, I would’ve liked it more if the actual hand signals were communicated better, rather than just translations or a ‘flurry of movements’ or things like that.

The character descriptions were quite non-existent, so I pictured them being Persian/Indian (I’m not too sure if that’s correct, if their ethnicity was actually mentioned please correct me!), from the occasional cultural reference. It was kind of mentioned in the book that they’re of the Muslim religion, but some of the things that happened in the book seemed odd to me, like 8-year-old Farah was allowed to get up and sit on a stranger’s lap??? That just seems odd to me, since the Persian side of my family would say that’s a big no-no??? BUT then again, I might’ve pictured the characters being from an incorrect culture or religion.

Adam has an interesting quirk where he seems to play around with words he finds interesting, and I was a little bit confused at first, but then I found them more interesting as the book progressed. BUT there was one area near the end of the book where the writing turned into a few pages of thought, and I couldn’t follow and just found it really hard to read. I suppose that might’ve been the point of it? But I just couldn’t read it. ALSO the character speech got super confusing at times, the slang and accents were very clear through the way the speech was written, but most of the time I struggled to understand what they were talking about or what they meant.

To be honest, I’m not sure how I feel about this book, there were so many questionable aspects for me to truly grasp it and enjoy it, but at the same time it wasn’t a bad book, per say.
