despite being written in the 50’s, much of this book still holds up and its core themes unfortunately are still relevant today. I thought it was at its strongest in its portrayal of Charlie’s childhood as well as its critiques of not just the violent behavior he faces but also the pity. I can’t truly give it five starts because there are some elements that have aged but overall it still has a powerful message that makes you reflect on how our world views and treats disabled people.
Graphic: Ableism, Bullying, Child abuse, Emotional abuse, Hate crime, Forced institutionalization
Moderate: Sexual violence, Medical trauma, Sexual harassment
Minor: Confinement, Suicidal thoughts
