Memoirs of A Geisha
by Arthur Golden
3.75 - This was an extremely interesting part of history that I was previously ignorant of. The life of Geishas were fantastical at times but were ultimately rooted in servitude. It is hard to reconcile the idea that families would sell their children to Geishas districts. However, it’s also hard to imagine living a life where one cannot even afford to support themselves let alone their families.
This book was fairly evocative and occasionally depicted sexual content. In these instances, the content was not sensual, rather the author stated Sayuri’s discomfort and submission to forced intimacy.
After reading this book, I was very curious about Geishas as a whole. I came to learn that some people are enraged by this book because the author seems to portray Geishas as sex workers or even prostitution. Technically Geishas are skilled artists and entertainers. Nevertheless, it was interesting reading about what the book got historically correct vs what was imagined.
Overall, I thought this book was extremely interesting and opened my eyes to diverse historical perspectives.
