Julia by Sandra Newman
5.0
challenging dark emotional tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

One of the best books I’ve read in years. I loved that there are no fully good guys and fully bad guys, no black and white, only gray areas. I loved that I kind of hated Julia but also loved her— because I understood her. I loved how human she was. I loved how her sexuality was front and center but not in a syrupy way or a male-gaze-centered way; Julia is uniquely and powerfully sexual in her own ways, as all women are.

Overall, I was captivated by how the author wrote complexity into every layer of the plot, the political factions, and Julia herself. It got a little slow in the middle, but that doesn’t even cost it .25 stars for me. I will not forget this book soon.
