My One and Only by Kristan Higgins

4.0

This is the second book I've read by Kristan Higgins, and I think I'm becoming a new fan. She excels at character development and that really good slow burn type of romance, which I love. I'm not as big a fan of her brand of romantic comedy, which typically relies on cringe-worthy moments.

As with the previous book of hers I read (Just One of the Guys), the main relationship is contrasted against a bad relationship: specifically one that is lackluster to the point of confusion. Dennis, like the character of Ryan in JOOTG, doesn't seem to care that he's in a relationship with someone he has no passionate feelings for. I've never met anyone like that IRL so I find them unbelievable as characters. I would prefer if the other relationships in the book weren't so obviously wrong and added some complex feelings into the novel.

The main character in this book started out clichéd and annoying, but she became more complex and interesting as it went on. She has major personality flaws which result in disaster. It can be hard to read at times.

But I loved the emotional pull of this book and the satisfying ending, even if the ending felt abrupt. They clearly had a lot of things to work out but we don't get to see them discuss it. Readers only get the summary of what they decided in the epilogue, as though they worked out all their problems like magic.
