Call Me Iggy by Jorge Aguirre

Take Home Message: maybe think twice before you use your grandpa-ghost as your Spanish tutor. ;)

OK, in addition to that...my thoughts here--- as much as I can type on my newly wonky keyboard that my child spilled orange juice all over (grrrrrrr). Call Me Iggy is a sweet (but not saccharine) YA graphic novel about Iggy, a Colombian-American high school freshman whose parents immigrated to the States as 20-somethings but became fully Americanized and have given Iggy and his older brother very little exposure to their Colombian heritage. When Iggy ends up in Spanish instead of the French class he wanted, he finds himself getting face time with a girl he has a little crush on. At the same time, he has a literal run-in with a Mexican American girl, Marisol.

Iggy "awakens" the ghost of his paternal grandfather, who "helps" him in Spanish and gives him life tips. All of this is set during Trump's presidential run, so we experience Iggy's tension about what a MAGA win could mean for his friends and family.

Overall, I enjoyed this one and its mention of societal issues is great in my opinion (as always!! )
