Superman: Year One by Frank Miller

3.0

This is a weird one. It seemed like it kept grasping at having something compelling to say, but kept coming up short. I really enjoyed the JRJR artwork and thought he did a bang-up job on the whole thing. Not sure what Miller was going for here, but it just didn’t work for me. The inner monologue just droned on and made each episode just feel much longer than they needed to be. I generally prefer Miller when both writes and draws (Hard Boiled and Give Me Liberty being the exceptions), but this just felt clunky. The first chapter about his younger years didn’t feel like it had anything new or interesting to say and just took way too long. Superman joining the military was an interesting idea, but when it devolved into a generic Atlantis story, I completely lost interest. The last chapter felt closest to the Year One concept, but, once again was inferior to recent early Superman stories and didn’t have anything new to add to the mythos.
