I've never been (Un)happier by Shaheen Bhatt
4.0

I've never been (Un)happier is Shaheen's honest account with depression. Shaheen has been living with depression for almost twenty years now and she describes how not knowing what it was during her early teenage life forced her into a shell.

She has captured her emotions perfectly. Like how somedays it was a struggle to even get up from the bed to brush her teeth, how she wouldn't leave her room for days or even weeks. She also sheds light on how people around her, the ones who loved her, where affected by her behaviour. She has very boldly talked about her suicidal thoughts and what finally led her to let go of them. She does not shy away from the fact that she comes from a privileged background and that it did help her to get good medical facilities and therapy.
She describes how she has finally stopped looking at it like something which causes her pain, but as a gift which allows her to feel deeply.

Each chapter starts with one of her journal entries and you get to know what she actually went through at that period of time. The book is full of extracts which make you think deeply. Here's one of them : "Take off the mask. You aren’t happy? Fine, you aren’t happy. One day you will be. And then you’ll be sad again. Accept that and stop wasting your energy chasing something that doesn’t exist. You can’t spend your life feeling bad about feeling bad." Depression is of various kinds and is different for different people. The book destigmatizes all the views surrounding depression. That we need to accept whatever problems we are facing in life and just appreciate it for what it is. While people living with depression will relate to it closely, others can really understand the feelings of a person suffering from depression.
